The Myth of Meritocracy Isn’t an Excuse for Bad Manners

Surround yourself with GOOD people, regardless of their background.

Don’t believe in meritocracy so much that you mistakenly believe that you’re a better person for having money. Money can go away tomorrow but character doesn’t.

And when I say money I don’t mean just liquid assets.

Attractiveness usually involves money — health and dental care, costly maintenance products, procedures, fashion choices.

Education usually involves money — school is expensive, social and cultural capital often exists in certain bubbles of socioeconomic class, prep and applications are expensive.

Being “interesting” usually involves money — travel costs, excursions, activities, the equipment to document and post it all on, event tickets.

SO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN SAY you don’t associate with people based on money, a lot of the things you evaluate people on-from how they look, how they speak, their job, their school, the activities they engage in in their free time, who they hang out with, whether they do similar things as you, how much they’re aware of or have experienced what you’re discussing or current topics-can be insidious ways of judging people by their money.

Good people are good people. Be a good person with good people, no matter where they come from.
